Eating Out: Cattle Baron Umhlanga Pearls

The restaurant includes the legendary up-market Grill House that Cattle Baron is famous for. The franchise was founded in 1987 by franchisor, Ronnie Dick, with the Cattle Baron Umhlanga Pearls being the first within KZN, which is owned by Essery Hamilton.

As a steak lover, this has got to be one of the best steak joints I have been to in Durban with a juicy and perfectly cooked steak presented within a reasonable time frame.

I had a 2-course meal – starter and main. The volume of both dishes were large and provide value for money, however, I do feel there can be imporvement on the presentation. The taste and quality were above average and I really enjoyed both my meals.

For my starter I shared a platter that offered stuffed mushrooms (deep fried white button mushrooms filled with a delicious mixture of cheese, breadcrumbs, parsley & sherry), crumbed calamari steak strips and venison carpaccio served with rocket heaped on bruschetta. The menu states that for R160 the platter serves 3-4 and I have to agree, especially if you are having a main meal. I found that this was the perfect starter to keep my hunger at bay until my main meal arrived, which took around 30 minutes in total, which I barely felt whilst digging into the starter and chatting in between bites.

When the main meal arrived, the plate was warm, the steak was steaming and it smelt delicious. I ordered a beef fillet steak off their specialty menu – the Carpetbagger with gourmet filling of feta cheese, bacon, and peppadews, which complemented the steak.

I had asked for my fillet medium and it was cooked to perfection, still pink inside, which is a plus for me. Well done to the Chef Thagen Sigamoney!

The meat itself was tender, succulent, flavoursome and filling.

If you are a meat lover, I would highly recommend the specialty steaks, of which there are a wide variety.

Not only does Cattle Baron have a vast menu of meaty dishes, they also provide vegetarian dishes, salads, and desserts and have a warm ambiance that is complemented by the upbeat background music. The restaurant itself is large and caters for both indoor and outdoor dining, catering to a vast variety of preferences.

Throughout the week, customers can also expect wonderful in-house specials and live music at the weekend.
