It’s July and on the 18th of this month marks an important day for South Africans, that of Mandela Day.
Nelson Mandela International Day commemorates the lifetime of service Nelson Mandela gave to South Africa and the world. It was launched on his birthday, 18 July, in 2009 via a unanimous decision by the UN General Assembly.
Mandela Day calls on us all, every day, to make the world a better place. Each year on 18 July we look back on what has been done and forward to what will be done.
My July #InspirationForTheNation is every person who gets involved in Mandela Day this year.
Change starts with each and every one of us and this year, the theme is #ActionAgainstPoverty.
In my mind, this theme could not be more important, as South Africa struggles with a high percentage of unemployment, with a large portion of society living in debilitating environments and with beggars at traffic lights. For me, poverty is one of the leading causes of crime and if we can help fight poverty, we may be able to fight the negatives that are associated with this as well.
Let’s make South Africa a country that takes action and inspires change not just on Mandela Day, but every day.
